The company’s lender restricted Frugal’s credit line six months ago, making it more difficult to purchase inventory to generate business, Doxer said. Doxer declined to name the bank that cut off the capital flow yesterday.

At the Framingham Frugal Fannie’s, shoppers were alternately shocked and eager to take advantage of the closing sale.

Formerly a “weekend warrior,” Frugal will now be open seven days a week to move its merchandise at prices slashed by up to 60 percent. The liquidation is being handled by Gordon Brothers Group, a Boston-based firm.

Over the past year, Frugal has laid off a number of employees. Approximately 50 employees remain, down from 90 full-timers and 400 part-timers last year.

Frugal’s turning point was Sept. 11, 2001. Two days after the terrorist attacks, Frugal’s Framingham store reopened on Route 128 two days after it opened one of its four stores near Washington, D.C. 30 following a bumpy relocation.

The country and retailers in general went through a terrible time during that period, Doxer said. In that period, it would be impossible to hold a grand opening sale.”

In March 2002, the D.C.-area stores closed.

Many of the original employees still work for Frugal Fannie’s today. Keeping expenses low is made possible by the warehouse setting. Women’s clothing, shoes, and costume jewelry are the only merchandise available.

Frugal Fannie’s are both harmed and benefitted by the current economic downturn, unlike the post-9/11 recession.

Even though shoppers are spending less money, more are turning to retailers that offer bargain prices on brand name closeouts, buyouts, overstocks, and sample sales.
