Choosing the most important event in a given year is necessarily subjective. Even if it wasn’t the most famous event in a given year, we chose the event that had the most impact on society.

Suffrage for women in 1920

• Date: 26 August
• Located in Washington, D.C.

However, only a minority of the country’s population – white landowning men over 21 who were white in race – could vote in the beginning of the country’s history. Women were finally given a voice and the right to vote after the 19th Amendment was passed, although the voting rights struggle for African American women, especially in the South, was far from over.

The Chinese Communist Party rises in 1921

• The 1st of July is the date
• Beijing is the location

Mao Zedong attends the Chinese Communist Party’s first National Congress, which is a precursor to the rise of Red China and Mao Zedong. A further 28 years would pass before the Republic of China became the People’s Republic of China.

A shrinking British Empire in 1922

• Date: 28 February
• London is the location

By the end of World War I, the British Empire dominated about a fourth of the world’s population, commanding a global population estimated at 570 million. After Britain declared limited independence for Egypt in 1920, the empire’s size began to shrink. Two years later, Egypt achieved full independence.

The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923

• Date: September 1
• The event will take place in Tokyo, Yokohama, Japan

Known as the Tokyo-Yokohama earthquake, the Great Kanto earthquake struck the Japanese mainland at noon on Sept. 1, 1923. 140,000 people are estimated to have died. Many homes collapse or are engulfed in flames after the temblor.

60 people are killed at Atami in the Sagami Gulf as a result of the quake, with the tsunami reaching a height of almost 40 feet. One of the most significant outcomes of the catastrophe was the rebuilding of Tokyo into a modern metropolis.

From Lenin to Stalin in 1924

• Date: 21 January
• The location is Moscow

As soon as Stalin was elected as the new leader of the Soviet Union on Jan. 21, he began a purge of political rivals. In some cases, people are shifted to different positions, while in others, they are exiled, such as Leon Trotsky, the presumed successor to Lenin.

He grows increasingly paranoid as he gains control of the nation, and with it the level of violence and killing he commits against anyone he perceives to be a threat to his power.

A monkey trial is conducted in 1925 at Scopes Monkey Farm

• The 10th of July
• Located in Dayton, Tennessee

After teaching evolution at a Tennessee high school, John Thomas Scopes is prosecuted by the state because state law prohibits such teaching due to its conflict with biblical teaching. William Jennings Bryan, a Christian fundamentalist and former presidential candidate, faces off with lawyer Clarence Darrow.

Despite Scopes’ protests, the jury rules against him, forcing him to pay a $100 fine. Despite these efforts, it would take another 43 years before the US Supreme Court would rule that laws punishing people for teaching evolution are unconstitutional.

In 1926, the United States begins a system of numbered highways

• Nov. 11 is the date
• Located in the United States.

In an attempt to standardize roadways, especially local roads and trails with unfamiliar names, the federal government introduces the first national highway numbering system. The U.S. Numbered Highway System simplifies getting from one city or town to another for the growing number of car owners, thereby facilitating the great American tradition of road trips.

In 1927, Lindbergh flew nonstop from New York to Paris

• The date is May 21.
• The location is New York to Paris

On May 21, Charles Lindbergh becomes the first person to fly over the Atlantic Ocean nonstop when the monoplane The Spirit of St. Louis lands at Le Bourget Field in Paris. This feat ignites the imaginations of aspiring aviators about the possibilities of commercial flight.

The news would remain centered on Lindbergh, but for regrettable reasons. Although he was a strong advocate for American isolationism in the 1930s, he was criticized for admiring Nazi Germany’s aircraft industry. A failed kidnapping attempt in 1932 would also result in the death of his infant son.

During 1928, Amelia Earhart crossed the Atlantic

• The dates are June 17 and 18
• The location is Wales

A national heroine and feminist icon, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to pilot a plane across the Atlantic, from Newfoundland to Wales. She would go on to set numerous aviation records along the way.

Her next record would be the first solo flight from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland by a man or woman. As Earhart attempted to circumnavigate the globe in 1937, she and her copilot Fred Noonan vanished over the Pacific Ocean. Evidence suggests Earhart may have sent distress signals after surviving a crash on Gardner Island, a remote island in the western Pacific Ocean.

Wall Street crashes in 1929

• Dates: October 24-29
• The city of New York is the location

Black Tuesday in October 1929 brought an end to the “Roaring Twenties”, contributing to the Great Depression. Weakly regulated banks overlent, overvalued stocks, too many stocks bought on margin, an unrestrained exuberance that sent millions of people to convert their savings into stocks, a tightening of the Federal Reserve’s credit, and an agricultural drought contributed to the worst economic downturn in American history.

Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh rises to power in 1930

• Date: February 2
• The location is Hanoi

As part of his efforts to oust French colonial occupiers, Vietnamese independence fighter Ho Chi Minh founds the Communist Party of Vietnam. His supporters referred to him as “Uncle Ho” and saw parallels between his struggle against foreign occupiers and the Bolshevik struggle against the tsarist autocracy.

Empire State Building completed in 1931

• May 1 is the date
• New York City is the location

May Day is the day on which U.S. President Herbert Hoover inaugurates the Empire State Building. Until 1973 when the World Trade Center Towers are completed, it is the tallest building in Manhattan’s iconic skyline. After construction started in March of the previous year, the 86-story office building was completed in just 13 months.

The Germanization of Hitler in 1932

• Date: 25 February
• The location is Germany

Hitler receives an automatic citizenship after renouncing his Austrian citizenship seven years after renunciating it. His candidacy for office is now open. It took Hitler only two years from receiving his citizenship status to becoming Germany’s leader.

In 1933, FDR was elected president

• The date is March 12th.
• Washington, D.C. is the location.

Newly elected President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began his weekly “Fireside Chats” during the Great Depression, when millions of Americans were in soup kitchens and searching for work. In his first radio address, FDR explains in plain language why different parts of the country would temporarily close banks at different times. His goal is to curb panic withdrawals that have hurt efforts to stabilize the banking system, he explains.
