Take a look at the history of prairie farms
Prairie Farms has been in business for more than 80 years, and since then, farmers have been running the
company with the hope of providing their community with high-quality, fresh dairy products. Prairie Farms
was founded in 1938 by a group of Illinois dairy farmers to improve market conditions for selling cream.
By 1949, the company expanded its products to include bottled milk, cottage cheese, and ice cream. With more
than 50 acquisitions and a dozen mergers conducted over the course of the company’s history, Prairie Farms has
expanded its reach and products over the years. Through these acquisitions and mergers, Prairie Farms also acquired
six cheese manufacturing plants under the Prairie Farms Cheese Division.
During the month of December 2016, Prairie Farms announced the acquisition of Swiss Valley Farms Cooperative.
This opportunity of growth also involved the acquisition of cheese plants in Luana, Iowa, Faribault, Minnesota, Mindoro,
Wisconsin, and Rochester, Minnesota, as well as the acquisition of Swiss Valley Farms co-op. With the acquisitions
of Shullsburg Creamery and White Hill Cheese in 2020, Prairie Farms will have added two more facilities to its family.
The Commitment of Prairie Farms to the Community
As your neighborhood farmers, Prairie Farms supplies fresh, high-quality milk to grocery stores that we, too, shop at, as well. It is very important to us that we contribute to our communities, as many of us serve on local boards and committees in our local schools, churches, and municipalities. In addition to our division office being located in the Quad Cities community where Prairie Farms is based, Prairie Farms is also a proud sponsor of the Quad City Times Bix 7, the CASI Hat Bash and other local events.
